A new malware targeting Apple devices has been discovered. Mainly affecting Mac owners, it infiltrates computers by mimicking popular apps. Researchers warn of the danger of Cthulhu Stealer.
Cthulhu Stealer threat for Mac grows
Security researchers have found a new virus targeting Mac devices called “Cthulhu Stealer” on cybercrime forums. According to Cado Security’s findings, the malware has been up for sale since late 2023.
Cthulhu Stealer tricks users by imitating popular software such as CleanMyMac. Once authorized, it can steal sensitive data stored on the Mac, such as iCloud passwords, browser cookies and Telegram account details.
The latest attempted attack also highlights the growing security concerns for Mac owners. Cisco Talos recently uncovered a Microsoft vulnerability that could lead to system access and data theft on Mac devices.
On the other hand, malware like Banshee, which targets browsers to harvest login credentials, cryptocurrency wallets and personal information from Mac devices, also poses a threat. Apple continues to warn users against these vulnerabilities.
The increase in security threats for Mac reminds us that all platforms are at risk. That’s why we recommend that you only download from trusted sources and keep your software up to date.
